WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, James Williams, President of Engage Cuba, released the following statement on the 2016 election results. The U.S. House of Representatives and Senate both gained Republican and Democratic Members of Congress who support expanding travel and trade with Cuba.
"Over the past two years, we have made incredible progress in strengthening our relations with Cuba. Momentum is growing across the country, in Cuban-American communities, and in Congress to end 55 years of failed policy. Last night, we elected even more pro-engagement Republican and Democratic Members of Congress, advancing the legislative path forward to lift the embargo.
"It has become clear that there is strong, and growing, support across the American public and the American business community to strengthen relations with Cuba. Growing commercial and cultural ties that have been forged between our two nations have irreversibly altered our bilateral relations with Cuba. We remain hopeful that Mr. Trump, who has previously supported engagement with Cuba as a businessman and a politician, will continue to normalize relations that will benefit both the American and Cuban people."
