On October 26, Engage Cuba President James Williams presented on the growing number of opportunities for trade and investment in Cuba at the Certified Commercial Investment Member (CCIM) Institute’s annual conference in Atlanta, Georgia. CCIM, an influential organization for commercial real estate professionals, holds a yearly conference for real estate professionals to share new ideas, strategies, and technology in the field. This year'stheme was “International Investing in the Americas,” with Cuba at the top of the agenda.
As this event’s keynote speaker, Williams offered remarks on the changing relationship between the U.S. and Cuba and the opportunities this presents for trade and real estate investment Williams reminded the audience that while commercial trade with Cuba is opening up, the Cuban embargo prevents the U.S. export of real estate development from reaching its full potential in Cuba’s growing real estate market.
Despite the limitations posed by the embargo, CCIM members expressed a strong interest in pursuing investment opportunities in Cuba.. The discussion was particularly timely given the expected release of Cuba’s 2017 Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) portfolio this week, which will almost certainly provide insight into foreign commercial real estate prospects for the coming year.
