Statement from Engage Cuba on U.S. Flag-Raising Ceremony in Havana

AUGUST 14, 2015

HAVANA – As U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry prepares to personally oversee the raising of the American flag to mark the official opening of the U.S. Embassy in Cuba this Friday, James Williams, President of Engage Cuba, and Zane Kerby, President and CEO of the American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA), are traveling to Havana to highlight the growing potential and possibilities that come with greater engagement. Both will also be in attendance at Friday’s flag-raising ceremony. Williams issued the following statement on behalf of Engage Cuba:

“Secretary Kerry’s historic visit to Cuba this week sends a strong message that there is no going back on U.S.-Cuba relations, and that’s a good thing for the people of both of our countries. The Secretary’s flag-raising ceremony comes after extensive negotiations that led to greater freedom for our diplomats to travel around the island and interact with the Cuban people. Now it’s time for Congress to allow the American people the same freedom to travel. Congress should also free American ingenuity, business savvy and goodwill by ending the trade embargo and giving our businesses a chance to shape and strengthen this emerging market. It’s the right thing to do, and it’s the right time to do it.”
