Engage Cuba Holiday Part at the Cuban Embassy

Six months ago, Engage Cuba launched with a television ad calling for an end to the trade embargo and a historic party that brought together Cuban diplomats, U.S. policymakers and American business leaders. Exactly six months later, we hosted our holiday party at the Cuban Embassy in Washington, D.C. It was no coincidence that our event fell on the eve of December 17th, as we celebrated the one-year anniversary of Presidents Obama and Castro announcing a thaw in U.S.-Cuba relations. In particular, it was remarkable to host our party at the Cuban embassy rather than an “Interests Section”; reestablished diplomatic relations were one of many achievements within the past year.

Engage Cuba's Launch Party 2015

The launch party was hosted at The Partisan restaurant, dubbed The (Bi)Partisan for the evening, to underscore the growing support for this issue on both sides of the aisle. The energy was palpable with more than 200 guests turning out to mark this historic new era.

In attendance : Major business across industries (e.g., Comcast NBCUniversal, JetBlue, Teletech, Universal Music); media outlets (e.g., NBC, Wall Street Journal, New York Times); U.S. and Cuban diplomats (e.g., Roberta Jacobson, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs; José Cabañas, Cuban Ambassador to the U.S.); and Members of Congress (e.g., Senators Leahy, Klobuchar, Flake; Representatives Castor, Lee).

We also had broad representation from the Obama administration, including Roberta Jacobson, the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs who has played a key role in the talks to open embassies. In a sign of how far we’ve come, José Ramón Cabañas Rodríguez, Chief of Mission of the Cuban Interests Section, also joined the event in representation of his country.

We were fortunate to hear from Senators Leahy, Flake, and Klobuchar who all touched on the incredible progress that had been made in the six short months that have passed since President Obama’s action to normalize relations with Cuba on December 17th. What we heard from them and so many others is that there is a bipartisan path forward. After 54 years of a failed policy, it’s time for a change.

Engage Cuba Launches Television Ad

Engage Cuba, a group created to push for the end of the 53-year trade embargo, has a new ad that will begin airing Tuesday on Fox News, CNBC and MSNBC. “Since December, we’ve heard from Americans around the country who can’t believe the U.S. government is denying us the right to travel anywhere in the world,” said James Williams, president of Engage Cuba. “Public polls show that Americans are saying, ‘We are tired of the Cold War-era policy that won’t let us trade or travel to Cuba. We want our government to let us play a role in this significant period of transition.’ That’s why we’re launching Engage Cuba.”
