Mississippi and Cuba in the News

Press release: Engage Cuba, State Leaders Launch Mississippi State Council

WLOX: Biloxi mayor meets with Cuba representatives, discusses trade opportunities

Because of the city's location on the Gulf of Mexico, the Mississippi Coast is in a great position to trade with Cuba. Biloxi Mayor FoFo Gilich gave a proclamation to Miguel Fraga, the First Secretary at the Cuban Embassy in Washington D.C. Fraga has been on the Coast meeting with officials and talking about trade possibilities between his country and the Coast.

The Clarion-Ledger: Mississippians reflect on life in Cuba

Leonardo “Leo” Dopico, owner of Le’s Cuban Kitchen in Hattiesburg and the only Cuban Restaurant in Mississippi, was born and raised in Havana, Cuba. A former attorney in Cuba, he, his wife and child fled the country more than 15 years ago when he was accused of being sympathetic to the Untied States.

WDAM: Could the Cuban National Baseball Team be coming to Biloxi?

A group on the Mississippi Coast is close to working out a deal that would make Biloxi a part of the new dynamic between the two countries. There is one big thing America and Cuba have in common and that is the love of baseball.

Sun Herald: Casino executive hopes Yankee great will help lure business, baseball to Biloxi

Bobby Carter has made several trips to Cuba over four years, but next week’s jaunt could be the most fun. He’s going with Yankee Hall-of-Famer Richard “Goose” Gossage, who’s taking four cases of baseballs from the Yankee spring training camp to teach a clinic in Havana.

Mississippi Business Journal: Op-Ed: How Mississippi can benefit from the U.S.-Cuba relationship

Despite the fact that Cuba is located just across the Gulf, Mississippi farmers are losing out on Cuba’s growing market to foreign competitors around the world. Given Mississippi’s world-class ports and proximity to our island neighbor, as well as Cuba’s reliance on food imports, Mississippi is uniquely positioned to be a world leader in exports to Cuba.

SunHerald: South Mississippi Doctors Share Bounty with Cuba

Most people buy souvenirs when they visit abroad. Biloxi plastic surgeon Michael Diaz instead brought duffel bags full of goodies on his second trip to Cuba this year and returned with a commitment from Cuba’s top doctor to speak at Louisiana State University in the fall.

Mississippi Public Broadcasting: New Study Sees Opportunity for MS Farmers in Cuba

A new report by a group that advocates lifting the U.S. embargo on Cuba says Mississippi would see significant economic benefits from increased trade with its island neighbor. The Engage Cuba Coalition says Cuba imports as much as 80 percent of its food.

The Clarion-Ledger: Salter: Delta Council's Focus Practical, Political

For several years, Moran has been an advocate of opening Cuban markets to American farmers: “Developing agricultural trade relations with Cuba will allow the Cuban people to put more pressure on the Cuban government to change its behavior.
